Horizontal Directional Drilling

Horizontal Directional Drilling ColombiaMethod for the installation of pipes, conduits and cables using a surface-launched drilling rig, the HDD process begins with boring a small, horizontal hole (pilot hole) under the crossing obstacle (e.g. a highway, river) with a continuous string of steel drill rod. When the bore head and rod emerge on the opposite side of the crossing, a special cutter, called a back reamer, is attached and pulled back through the pilot hole. The reamer bores out the pilot hole so that the pipe can be pulled through. The pipe is usually pulled through from the side of the crossing opposite the drill rig.

Advantages

  • Short, medium or long lengths of pipe can be installed without intermediate pits.
  • Pipes can be installed either straight or curved to steer clear of obstacles.
  • By boring underground the working area is confined to points of entry and exit only.
  • No disruption to road, river or rail traffic and no scarring of the landscape.
  • Equipment works from surface with no need for deep excavations.
  • HDD is quick and in many cases has lower overall costs.
  • HDD is unaffected by surface obstacles.
  • Can be used to install pipes in changeable ground conditions.
  • Sea outfalls can be drilled with minimal marine works.
