Logging While Tripping (LWT)

Logging While Tripping (LWT) is a technique that allows geological data to be collected from the wellbore during the tripping process, i.e. when the drill string is being withdrawn or inserted.

Logging While Triping

Logging While Tripping (LWT) is an advanced and unique technology for open-hole geological and petrophysical information acquisition in wells with complex geometries and conditions. This technology is designed to operate in vertical, directional and horizontal wells, offering an effective solution in situations where conventional logging methods, such as Wireline or Logging While Drilling (LWD), may not be feasible or efficient.

Main Features and Advantages of LWT

  1. Data Acquisition in Any Type of Well: The LWT is designed to take measurements in wells with complicated geometries, ensuring high-quality data acquisition even in difficult conditions, such as highly deviated or horizontal wells.

  2. Minimization of Operational Risks: By not having radioactive sources during the drilling process and offering a robust design, the LWT system significantly reduces operational risks associated with open-hole data acquisition.

  3. Comparable Quality to Wireline or LWD: Although it does not require radioactive sources during the drilling process, the quality of the data obtained through LWT is comparable to that of conventional wireline or LWD logging tools, but with greater flexibility and adaptability.

  4. Reduction of Direct and Indirect Costs: LWT allows for the reduction of costs associated with logging acquisition, both in operational terms and in the value of the investment in equipment. In addition, by reducing the risk of loss in hole (LIH) by 80%, the total cost of the operation is considerably reduced.

  5. Optimization of Time and Operational Efficiency: Unlike conventional systems that require interrupting operations to lower logging tools, LWT allows data to be taken during the tripping process (while the pipe is being pulled out or lowered), which maximizes efficiency and minimizes non-productive time.

Applications

  • LWT is particularly useful in wells where conditions make other logging methods difficult to implement. This includes:

  • Horizontal wells where access with Wireline tools is limited

  • Directional or highly tortuous wells where wellbore stability is critical. Situations where cost and risk reduction is a priority.

In summary, the LWT system represents a significant evolution in open hole data acquisition in wells with challenging conditions, combining efficiency, safety and accuracy at a competitive cost, making it a preferred choice in complex or high economic efficiency drilling operations.
